Swimmer's Ear: Treating Ear Pain After the Beach in Tangier

Summer in Tangier is all about swimming, whether at Achakar beach, Tangier Bay, or your hotel pool. But a few days later, a sharp pain in your ear can ruin your vacation: this is otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear.

It's one of the most common conditions our home doctors treat during the summer season. Here's how to recognize it, relieve it, and when to call a doctor.

How to recognize swimmer's ear?

Unlike middle ear infections (more common in children during winter), swimmer's ear affects the outer ear canal. Water trapped in the ear after swimming creates a perfect moist environment for bacteria or fungi to grow.

The symptoms are very characteristic:

  • Intense pain that worsens if you pull on your earlobe or press on the little bump in front of your ear (the tragus).
  • Feeling of fullness or muffled hearing in the affected ear.
  • Severe itching inside the ear canal.
  • Clear or yellowish discharge (pus) draining from the ear.
  • Redness and swelling at the entrance of the ear canal.
💡 Quick test: If chewing food or moving your jaw causes sharp pain in your ear, it's highly likely you have swimmer's ear. When in doubt, call Enurgence - SOS Médecin Tanger for immediate medical advice.

First steps to relieve the pain

While waiting to see a doctor, here is what you can do at your home or hotel:

  1. Keep the ear dry: Stop swimming and avoid getting water in your ear while showering (use a cotton ball coated in petroleum jelly).
  2. Apply heat: A warm compress or a warm water bottle held against the ear can significantly reduce pain.
  3. Take painkillers: Over-the-counter paracetamol can help temporarily ease the pain.
  4. Put NOTHING in the ear: No cotton swabs (Q-tips), no random ear drops, and no home remedies without medical advice. Putting the wrong product in an ear with a perforated eardrum can cause permanent damage.

⚠️ When to call a home doctor?

Swimmer's ear rarely goes away on its own. A medical consultation is necessary, especially if:

  • The pain is keeping you awake at night.
  • You have a fever (a sign the infection is spreading).
  • You notice swollen lymph nodes around your ear or in your neck.
  • The patient is diabetic or has a weakened immune system (high risk of severe complications).

At Enurgence - SOS Médecin Tanger, our doctors arrive within 20 minutes anywhere in Tangier. The doctor will examine your eardrum with an otoscope to ensure it's not perforated. They will then prescribe the correct antibiotic (or antifungal) ear drops, and sometimes oral medication. Within 48 to 72 hours, you'll be back to enjoying your vacation!

Prevention: 4 tips to avoid swimmer's ear

  1. Dry your ears thoroughly after every swim by tilting your head and using the corner of a towel.
  2. Avoid cotton swabs (Q-tips): They push earwax (which naturally protects the ear) deeper and create micro-scratches where bacteria can thrive.
  3. Wear silicone earplugs while swimming if you are prone to recurrent ear infections.
  4. Rinse with fresh water after swimming in the ocean or a chlorinated pool.
